Therapy Dog Training - GROUP

Therapy Dog Training is a weekly GROUP class for handlers who wish to train their dogs to be ready for therapy dog testing. Active, currently working therapy dogs and handlers may also participate in this group to maintain and perfect the obedience skills of their working dogs.

Therapy dogs are trained to provide comfort, affection and even support to people in hospitals, assisted living environments, retirement homes, schools, libraries, and disaster areas. Therapy Dogs are part of a larger group called "Animal Assisted Therapy", AAT are regarded as helping individuals gain emotional stability or confidence during times of uncertainty.

Therapy dogs should have a natural calm and gentle disposition. They should have a desire to be near people and enjoy being touched by people. They must be trained to remain calm and under control around other dogs, groups of people, hallways, elevators, noises, surface textures, smells and in some cases, medical equipment.

Instructed skills are necessary to test for the International Association of Canine Professionals, IACP Therapy Dog Certification (expected release 2024). Handlers preferring to use another organization for therapy dog testing, registration or certification may also do so at their own expense.

Classes are taught by Tracy Atkins our Professional Advanced Certified Dog Trainer who has 30 years professional experience and is a Therapy Dog Handler.

Therapy Dogs are NOT covered under the ADA and therefore have no public access, with exception to the specific locations they have been approved for working.

This GROUP is held once a week for 60 minutes each class. Times and locations vary week to week to accommidate the many facets of the training objectives. A full course schedule is available upon request. The Group requires 20 minutes of DAILY TRAINING by the handler at their location. The course requires a six-month membership.

This class is specifically formulated to help pet owners train their dogs to be ready for Therapy Dog Testing.

Membership includes a private Facebook group for exchanging ideas and training techniques and scheduling meetups for additional training.
